Since it’s creation in 2023, Speargrass HiFi has been the heart and soul of many boutique gigs, like Darwin Dub Club at De la Plage and Kite’s Corner Takeover as part of Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival.
Built by Ward Hancock and Clarence Playford, it’s the first and currently only Jamaican-style sound system in Darwin. Designed for reggae, dub, DnB and jungle, it pays homage to influential systems from around the world.
As Speargrass Hi-Fi, Ward has collaborated with Sydney and Goldsmiths University (London) as part of their Sound System Outernational initiative, as well as collaborating with highly successful local fashion label and foundation, House of Darwin - building custom speakers for their new shop, organizing and sourcing equipment for a jam space at Bagot Community, and running Live & Direct – a community festival at Bagot community showcasing local musicians and DJs.

Ward’s Speargrass Sound System was exactly what we needed for our Jamaican Independence Day celebrations! The sound was crystal clear, the vibes were flowing and his service was top class. We’re so grateful for the energy he brought to the event. We can't wait for the next one!

SPEARGRASS HI FI brought an incredible depth and warmth to our TRACKS dance show. As a producer of a lot of dance and theatre projects, it’s rare to hear music come alive with such richness and clarity through a sound system. Not only does it look stunning, but the energy it carries lifted the entire performance and gave the audience a powerful, shared experience.
